NCBWA NAMES DIVISION IIINATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) A solid week in which he accounted for 20 runs by Ronald Echavarria of Purchase College-State University of New York, and a perfect game by Ryan Jacobs of Pennsylvania State University-Behrend, have earned them the seventh NCAA Division III National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors respectively for April 8-14, 2013, as voted on by a panel of D-III members of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.


Echavarria, a senior designated hitter/outfielder from Bronx, N.Y., collected 11 hits in 17 at-bats for a .647 batting average with 11 runs batted in and nine runs scored as Purchase went 4-0 in league play and 5-0 on the week. He cracked three doubles, two home runs and a triple for a 1.294 slugging percentage, and added a pair of walks. He began the week with a 4-for-4 game in a 9-8 win over St. Josephs-Brooklyn in which he had a triple, home run, and drove in four. His sacrifice fly in the fourth inning lifted the Panthers past Mount Saint Mary 1-0 on Apr. 13 in teammate Adam Brant·s no-hitter. He finished with a 5-for-7 day with seven RBI on Apr. 14 as Purchase earned 20-3 and 12-1 victories over Mount Saint Vincent. Echavarria was the Skyline Conference Player of the Week.


In a week in which four no-hitters were thrown, Jacobs, a senior from Port Vue, Pa., stood out as he threw the first perfect game in Lions history in a 1-0 home victory over Mount Aloysius, a team that was hitting better than .300, in the first game of a doubleheader on Apr. 14. The right-hander was dominant on the mound with six strikeouts, throwing less than 70 pitches in seven innings and going to a three-ball count just twice. Jacobs leads the team with a 5-0 record and ranks first in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference in opponents· batting average (.189), second in earned run average (1.51), and fourth in batters struck out (36). Jacobs was the AMCC Pitcher of the Week.
