NCBWA NAMES DIVISION INATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE MONTH

DALLAS (NCBWA) Memphis senior outfielder Chris Carrier has been tabbed as the Player of the Month and Houston left-handed starting pitcher Trey Cumbie has been named the Pitcher of the Month for May by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, it was announced on Monday afternoon.

A native of Memphis, Tenn., Carrier had an elite month in May for the Memphis Tigers. A first-team All-American Athletic Conference first-team honoree in 2017, Carrier slugged eight homers over 14 games in May, driving in 23 runs and hitting .421 (24-for-57) with five doubles and a .529 on-base percentage. On the year, Carrier finished his final collegiate season with a .330 average (68-for-206) with 16 doubles, 16 homers and 50 RBI, sporting a .438 on-base and a .641 slugging percentage.

Cumbie, a native of Lufkin, Texas, won all four of his starts in May, tossing two complete games and allowing just two earned runs in 34 innings. A second-team All-America selection by Collegiate Baseball in 2017, Cumbie had a 0.53 ERA during the month, allowing only 22 hits and four walks over 28 strikeouts. As a sophomore, Cumbie posted a 10-2 record and a 2.04 ERA in 15 starts, hurling four complete-game efforts and tossing 101.1 innings, surrendering just 15 walks and 91 hits, striking out 82.

This marks the second season the NCBWA has honored a national player and pitcher of the month.
