FWAA ANNOUNCES 2001 ALL-AMERICA TEAM

DALLAS (FWAA) – Miami and Florida, the 1-2 ranked teams in college football, each placed three players on the 2001 Football Writers Association of America All-America football team announced on Wednesday.

The top-ranked Hurricanes placed defensive back Edward Reed and offensive tackles Bryant McKinnie and Joaquin Gonzalez on the 25-man team which has been selected every year since 1944. Reed and Gonzalez are repeat All-Americas from the 2000 team.

Florida also had an offensive tackle on the team, 6-foot-7, 292-pound Mike Pearson, wide receiver Jabar Gaffney and defensive end Alex Brown. Pearson and Gaffney are only juniors.

Tennessee and Oklahoma each placed two players on the team. The Sooners had a repeat All-America, linebacker Rocky Calmus, and standout safety Roy Williams. Outland Trophy winner from a year ago, Tennessee defensive tackle John Henderson, joined teammate running back Travis Stephens on the squad. Henderson also is a repeat All-America, one of four on the team.

Players from nine conferences are represented on the team which is selected by the nine-person FWAA All-America committee.
