TIPTON, CARROLL ARE USBWA
DIV. III NATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA)Lyle Tipton of Geneva College (Beaver Falls, Pa.) and Meg Carroll of Lasell University (Newton, Mass.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending December 5.

Tipton, a 6-3 junior guard/forward from Glenside, Pa., filled up the stat sheet in leading Geneva (4-2) to a pair of victories. On Wednesday, he totaled 35 points (13-of-17 FG, 7-of-9 FT, 2-of-3 3FG), nine rebounds, five assists, two steals, and five blocks in the Golden Tornadoes' 87-77 road victory at Thiel. Then, on Saturday, Tipton hit the go-ahead bucket with 18 seconds left and a free throw with six seconds remaining to lead Geneva to an 81-79 win against previously-undefeated Chatham (6-1). Tipton recorded a double-double of 22 points (7-of-14 FG, 8-of-11 FT) and 10 rebounds, while adding three assists, two steals and two blocks. Over the two games, he averaged 28.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.0 steals, and 3.5 blocks while shooting 64.5 percent (20-of-31) from the field, 75.0 percent (15-of-20) from the foul line and 40.0 percent (2-of-5) from three-point range. For his efforts, Tipton was also named Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) Player of the Week.

Carroll, a 5-11 senior forward from Douglas, Mass., recorded a pair of double-doubles and a school record as Lasell (2-4) defeated both of its opponents last week. On Tuesday, she scored a school-record 39 points (15-of-24 FG, 9-of-14 FT), while adding a career-high 20 rebounds, three assists and two blocks in the Lasers' 83-77 win over Northern Vermont-Johnson. Then, on Thursday, Carroll scored 10 of her 28 points (13-of-21 FG, 2-of-4 FT) over the final five minutes to secure a 72-67 victory at Rivier. Her stat line in the game also included 15 rebounds, two assists and two blocks. For the week, Carroll averaged 33.5 points, 17.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.0 steals, and 2.0 blocks while shooting 62.2 percent (28-of-45) from the field and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from the foul line. For her efforts, Carroll was also named Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week.

Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. The program has resumed after a one-season hiatus and this is the seventh season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers. With some 900 members worldwide, it is one of the most influential organizations in college basketball. It has selected an All-America team since the 1956-57 season.
