INDIANAPOLIS (USBWA) – Tyler Frederick of La Roche University (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Katie Garrish of Southern Virginia University (Buena Vista, Va.) were named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division III National Players of the Week for the week ending January 5.
Frederick, a 6-4 junior forward from Butler, Pa., produced three double-doubles as La Roche (6-5, 6-0) won all three games it played. On Wednesday, December 18, Frederick scored 23 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and added two assists and a steal in the Redhawks' 78-62 win over Mt. Aloysius. He scored a career-high 34 to go with 12 rebounds, three steals and a block in an 89-73 win over Pitt-Greensburg on Saturday, December 21. Then, on Saturday, January 4, Frederick had 30 points, 19 rebounds, two assists, and two blocks in his team’s 90-79 win against D’Youville. Over the three games, Frederick averaged 29 points, 14.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks while shooting 66 percent (35-of-53) from the field, 70 percent (14-of-20) from the foul line and 30 percent (3-of-10) from three-point range. Currently eighth in NCAA Division III with 12.3 rebounds per game, Frederick was also named the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) Player of the Week.
Garrish, a 6-3 junior forward from Annandale, Va., also registered three double-doubles as Southern Virginia (11-2) won all of its three games last week. In Monday's 60-50 win against Mary Baldwin, Garrish totaled 29 points, 18 rebounds, two assists, five steals, and two blocks. Then, in the Knights' 64-59 victory over Averett on Thursday, she scored 11 points, collected 14 rebounds, totaled three blocks, and added an assist. In her final game of the week on Saturday, Garrish finished with 24 points, 12 rebounds, two blocks, and one steal in her team’s 72-70 win. For the week, she averaged 21.3 points, 14.7 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 2.0 steals, and 1.0 assists per game. Garrish knocked down 50 percent of her field goal (27-of-54) and free throw (10-of-20) attempts. Currently leading NCAA Division III with 10 double-doubles this season, she also ranks eighth in blocks per game (3.38). For her efforts last week, Garrish was also named the Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Week.
Each Tuesday, the USBWA is selecting men's and women's Division III National Players of the Week. This is the sixth season that the USBWA will recognize national players of the week from Division III.
The U.S. Basketball Writers Association was formed in 1956 at the urging of then-NCAA Executive Director Walter Byers.
