Fri., April 5: The USBWA announced the winners of its two National Player of the Year Awards on site at the men's and women's Final Fours. Duke freshman Zion Williamson, also the winner of the Wayman Tisdale Award, won the Oscar Robertson Trophy. The ACC Player of the Year is just the third freshman to win the trophy, joining Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis. Iowa's Megan Gustafson, the first player to score 1,000 points in a single season, won the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award. Both Williamson and Gustafson will be formally presented with the awards at the USBWA COllege Basketball Awards Dinner on April 15 at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis.

Thurs., Oct. 17: The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has named its annual recognition of its women's national freshman of the year the Tamika Catchings Award. Catchings, vice president of basketball operations for the Indiana Fever of the WNBA, was the consensus national freshman of the year during the 1997-98 season, when she averaged 18.2 points per game to lead the Tennessee Lady Volunteers to a national championship in a 39-0 season.
