NCBWA NAMES DIVISION IIINATIONAL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

DALLAS (NCBWA) A blistering .750 week for Tommy Schmidt of Lawrence University and 15 innings without allowing an earned run by Fabian Gomez of Rockford College have earned them the NCAA Division III National Hitter and Pitcher of the Week for April 30-May 6, the 10th and final week of the season for national honors, as selected by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.


Schmidt, a sophomore first baseman from Two Rivers, Wisc., was 12-for-16 with three doubles, two homers and nine RBI in four games against Carroll. He scored eight runs, compiled a .789 on-base percentage, and a 1.313 slugging percentage. He started his week by going 4-for-4 with a double, a homer and three RBI in Lawrence s 10-0 series-opening victory. He also went 1-for-2 in the nightcap of that doubleheader, a 4-3 Lawrence win. In game three of the series, a 15-14 Lawrence win, he went 2-for-5 with a double and three runs scored. In the series finale, he tied the school record for hits in a game by going 5-for-5 with a double, a homer, three runs scored and six RBI. He raised his average on the season to .333. Schmidt was the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week.


Gomez, a senior southpaw from Las Cruces , N.M. , went six innings in a relief appearance against #22 Illinois Wesleyan University and threw a nine-inning shutout at Concordia University-Chicago. Against IWU, he recorded eight strikeouts and allowed only two hits. In the CUC game, which clinched the Northern Athletic Conference championship, he threw his fifth complete game of the season, allowing only six hits while adding seven strikeouts. He did not allow a single earned run during his 15 innings last week. Gomez was the Northern Athletics Conference Pitcher of the Week.
